Strength From the Past

Perkins Builders was founded in 1965 when brothers Jim and Neville Perkins commenced trading in Bunbury Western Australia under the name Perkins Bros Builders

The company’s first project was an extension to the Main Roads WA Depot in Robertson Drive Bunbury. It seemed entirely appropriate therefore, when exactly 40 years later the company was awarded the contract to build a new $4m office building for Main Road WA on the exact same site! The epitome of “repeat business”.

During its first 30 years of operation the company contracted extensively throughout the south west of Western Australia, successfully completing a diverse range of commercial, industrial and civil engineering projects and building an enviable reputation as a reliable and quality contractor.

In 1995 Neville’s son Dan was appointed Managing Director. Dan had joined the company in 1983 as an apprentice carpenter and worked his way up through the ranks fulfilling the roles of foreman, site manager and contracts manager. With Dan at the helm the company experienced a prolonged period of expansion growing its turnover from $3m in 1995 to $80m in 2007 and increasing staff numbers in the same period from 10 to 75.

In 2001 Perkins established a Perth office to capitalise on its growing reputation and to gain exposure to the burgeoning Perth commercial building market. Shortly afterwards, in 2003, the Busselton office of Perkins Builders was established to better service the increasing work load the company was achieving in the fast growing tourism and wine growing regions of Dunsborough, Yallingup and Margaret River.

In recent years Perkins has built a reputation as Western Australia’s leading builder of aquatic and recreational facilities. Since 1997 the company has completed over $100m of aquatic and recreational projects including major facilities such as the South West Sports Centre in Bunbury ($16m), Narrogin Regional Sports complex ($10m) and Next Generation Health Fitness and Lifestyle Clubs at Bibra Lake and Kings Park in Perth ($27m). More recent work completed includes the Manea College ($22m) & Dalyellup College ($22m).

This reputation was further enhanced in 2007 when Perkins acquired a 50% stake in national commercial swimming pool contractor AVP Commercial Pools. This acquisition has enabled Perkins and AVP to offer a complete in house design and construction service for commercial aquatic and aquatic related recreational facilities.

Vision For the Future

Perkins will continue to operate at the forefront of construction project delivery by keeping abreast of the latest industry systems and techniques and a continuing emphasis on training and professional development of its people.

By attracting the best people, Perkins will place itself in a position whereby it can aggressively target selected projects and continue the company’s impressive growth pattern of recent years.
