BLSC Training & MBA Conference 2017
December 4, 2017
A team of individuals from the Perkins Group of Companies, representing each state of office were lucky enough to head to Melbourne at the end of November for a week of professional development and educational experiences as a part of the MBA’s Building Leadership Simulation Course. Each staff member was awarded the opportunity through their inspired entries n the Leadership Programme Competition held earlier in the year.
Starting the week at the MBA’s Building Leadership Simulation Centre, the team spent two days engaged in intense training in conflict resolution and effective communication specific to the construction industry. Involving a combination of classroom learning and simulated conflict situations mirroring those from the real world, the course guided attendees in identifying key communication techniques, armed them with the tools needed to deal with common conflict situations and allowed them to try practice in a simulated office scenario. Whilst the concept of being yelled at as a form or training may seem peculiar, the course certainly stimulated discussion and reflection in all that attended, providing value and a new outlook on communication.
Whilst in Victoria the team took the chance to see what Perkins Group Company, Commercial Aquatics Australia has been up to by visiting their Victorian Cricket Centre construction project and inspected their completed Craigieburn Aquatic Centre project.
Following this the team then travelled to Hobart, in picturesque Tasmania for the Master Builder’s Australia 2017 National Conference and Awards. At the conference attendees were treated to a variety of presentations from inspirational and educational speakers such as Olympic Cycling Gold Medalist Anna Meares and a site tour of the historic Parliament Square Redevelopment construction site amongst many other activities. Rounding out the event on the Saturday night was the National Awards Dinner, where Commercial Aquatics Australia was awards National Specialist Contractor of the Year for the spectacular Crown Towers Perth, and after two years at the helm, saw our Managing Director Dan Perkins hand over the National Master Builders Association Presidency to Mr Hedley Davis.
“What a great experience the Building Leadership Simulation Complex was. Going into it not knowing what to expect I was pleasantly surprised at how we were set simulated site tasks to take us out of our comfort zone. Lessons learnt will be invaluable moving forward” – Frank, Perkins Site Manager.
